In January this year, I wrote a blog post called ‘2019 roundup and plans for 2020’, however, I didn’t know that all plans would be put on hold or completely changed for a worldwide pandemic. A scary time of being at home worried about our families, friends, and livelihoods. So what were my plans for this year?
The pandemic meant I had 3 months at home on furlough with my children who had to navigate schoolwork online and miss the end of year parties and goodbyes. I have now returned to one job and will shortly return to my second job. So what happened to those plans and what changed for me during that time and were there any benefits? I had to postpone an exhibition but not all was lost… I was set to take part in a group exhibition with some work colleagues at The Poly, Falmouth. The exhibition titled Beyond Sea and Shore was scheduled to run from 28th April – 2nd May 2020. I planned to exhibit a large canvas and a few smaller pieces on paper depicting the sea and landscape. I was disappointed it wasn’t set to go ahead but postponing the show meant I was able to make more pieces into a body of work giving it more direction and meaning. I have uploaded some of this work to the website which you can find under the title Hireth. A new show… Just before the lockdown, I was approached by a business owner in Penzance to be a part of their new vision for their high street shop which was going in a new creative direction. I decided to offer 3 pieces of the work (You can view here) created for Hireth to show in the shops’ new venture called A Beautiful Room Project, upstairs at Circa21, Penzance. The beautiful room was a gallery space and has been transformed into a fresh contemporary coastal living space with art, ceramics, home living accessories. As part of this, the free Summer Art Guide produced by My Cornwall ran a feature on the new venture mentioning me as a participating artist. I was interviewed for the Inside Job Collective… The Inside Job Collective is a team that produces the Tate staff biennale showcasing art by the staff working for Tate Gallery across all 4 of its sites. Last year my work was shown and sold at Tate Modern, I wrote about that HERE. During the lockdown, Inside Job showed pieces of work on their Instagram feed by staff and asked how each person was responding to and coping with the lockdown period. My painting was shown on the feed and responses to their questions was shared on their blog site. Visit the virtual exhibition at insidejobcollective.blogspot.com to view all artists. It was nice to see art and ideas from different perspectives especially as so many artists were using their online platforms more to sell their art as part of the new artists’ pledge to sell work and then buy a piece of art from the proceeds.
